Chaffey Baseball ended it’s first fall baseball program in Peoria this past weekend by winning all four nine inning games in the Arizona Baseball Academy Tournament.
With only having one senior on the team that being Nic Crosta the players did very well.
We ended up playing 16 games, with the players really improving from the start to the finish. With nine of of the sixteen players being new to the program, it gave them a chance to meet and work with the coaches and have much better idea of what it will take to continue to play, improve and further their game.
Jason Conover worked with the pitchers all fall and considering they could only get together on weekends, they showed continual improvement, not only from a mechanical standpoint but the mental side of the game, from holding runners to sequencing of their pitches.
Bill Cohen was able to meet the players last week of the fall and also travel with the team to Peoria, which allowed him to have a better understanding of what they will need to work on at the plate and their approach to hitting.
When the fall program concluded and we made the trip to Peoria Mike Stoves, Alan Holland, Nick Verbon, Josh Monroe, Brian Kees, Ben Mummy, Richie Lentz, David Dean and Dan Knox all shared the pitching duties in the 35 innings we played. To help put their performances in the proper context they only walked two-batters over the four games. They all where outstanding……
The outfield duties where shared by Derek Dupree, John Addison, Ben Mummy, Richie Lentz and Josh Monroe. Jordan Wagner played up till the last week when he injured his shoulder-he will undergo surgery next week so he will be back this summer ready to go.
Nick Hundley did all of the catching for us in Peoria, including the warming up of the pitchers in the bull-pen.
First base was held down by Nick Verbon and Nic Crosta helped spell him for one of the games and when he pitched in relief.
Chris Minaker played short stop with Stan Nicholl playing second and Nic Crosta at third.
Chris Minaker lead us offensively hitting going 10-for 19 with an average of .526 and 10 runs scored, Nick Hundley was 9-for-19 with an average of .474 scoring 7 runs, Derek Dupree was 7-for-16 with and average of .438 and scored 4 runs, Stan Nicholl and Nic Crosta both where 7-for-18 with an average of .389 and each scoring 5 runs, Ben Mummy was 5-for-14 with an average of .357, John Addison was 6-for-17 average .353 scoring 7 runs and Nick Verbon was 4-for-13 with an average of .308; this was all done with them using wooden bats.
It was a great fall…………
