For the first time Chaffey Baseball and Baseball Beyond Borders met on the field with Chaffey coming out on top 7-0. Herb Chaffey was founding father of both programs, Chaffey Baseball starting 38 season ago and Bookie Gates dream of bringing baseball back to the inner-city with Herb’s assistance. Bookie was a past player with Chaffey Baseball, played ball at WSU and a stint in the Minor Leagues. He came home and wanted to have an impact and work with young people in the inner-city; with this in mind he started and founded the Baseball Beyond Borders.
With 2-outs in the top of the 1st inning Matt Gretler singled into left and stole 2nd. Zach Nussbaum drew a free pass and Trey Tiffany singled into right scoring Matt for Chaffey’s 1st run of the game. Brandon Mitchel and David Johnson had back to back walks forcing in Zach from 3rd. Jack Smith doubled into right center clearing the bases scoring Trey, Brandon and David giving Chaffey a 5-0 lead. Zach went 2-for-4 for the game scoring 2-runs.
Chaffey scored a single run in the top of the 3rd when Zach lead off with a double into right, and scored when Carson singled into right extending Chaffey’s lead to 6-0.
Colton Bunt led off the top of the 4th reaching first on a fielding error and stole 2nd. Kevin Nakahara hit a fielder’s choice to the right side moving Colton to 3rd. Matt then hit a sac-fly into left scoring Colton for Chaffey’s final run of the game.
Jacob Bogacz threw the first 2-innings only allowing 1-hit. Jimmy Boyce threw the 3rd and 4th innings striking out 5-of the batters he faced. Trey threw the 5th and 6th innings. Sam Leach closed the game out throwing the 7th, striking out 2-of 3-batters.
